Obstetric cholestasis can be a very serious condition affecting a pregnant woman and her unborn child. Obstetric cholestasis is a condition which needs to be diagnosed quickly in order to prevent a still birth. A delay in treatment could have serious consequences and may give rise to a clinical negligence claim.

What is obstetric cholestasis?

Obstetric cholestasis is caused by dysfunction of the liver, which releases harmful materials into the bloodstream during pregnancy. Symptoms of obstetric cholestasis include itchy hands and feet, occurring especially in the later, third stage of pregnancy.

Although obstetric cholestasis is potentially serious, it can be treated successfully if reported early enough. Any pregnant woman complaining of symptoms associated with obstetric cholestasis should be referred immediately to a consultant for appropriate blood and liver tests.
