A traumatic brain injury can sometimes result in post traumatic amnesia. If the injury resulted in a period of unconsciousness, this is often accompanied by post traumatic amnesia which manifests as confusion or loss of memory.

Some incidents of clinical negligence can cause post traumatic amnesia. In these situations a patient suffering from post traumatic amnesia may be entitled to compensation.

Post traumatic amnesia and clinical negligence

Patients receiving treatment in hospitals may end up suffering post traumatic amnesia as a result of that treatment. Post traumatic amnesia has been noted in children who have spent time on intensive care wards and who have developed delusional memories of their time in care. Post traumatic amnesia affects a patient's ability to correctly recall events but also involves a significant degree of confusion in addition to the amnesia-like memory loss.

Post traumatic amnesia has also been recorded in cases where patients may have been incorrectly anaesthetized for a surgical procedure and who then suffer from traumatic memories in the aftermath of that procedure.
