Cycling Accidents

Personal Injury
Cyclists make up only 0.6% of the traffic on UK roads.  However, they are involved in some 6% of the accidents.  After motorcyclists, cyclists are the second most at-risk group using the roads.  They are 10 times more likely to get involved in an accident in comparison to a car.

People are taking the environmental friendly approach by using a bicycle instead of a car.  Inevitably this leads to an increasing number of accidents involving cyclists.  Unfortunately cyclists are very vulnerable on the roads and have little protection if they are involved in any type of collision (especially a collision with a motor vehicle).

If you are well enough after the accident, you should exchange details with the other party.  Obtain as much information as possible including the driver's name, their vehicle registration number, their address and contact telephone number together with their insurer's name and a policy number.

If there are any witnesses to the accident, you should also take their names, addresses and telephone numbers.

If you are taken straight to the hospital after your cycle accident, the police should take details of the other driver(s) involved in the accident, which can then be passed onto you.

Moreover, if you hit a pothole or suffer an accident because of a defective road surface, you may be able to pursue a claim against the Highways Authority. If the local authority responsible was aware of the defect and failed to repair it, or did not carry out regular inspections of the road, you could make a successful cycling accident compensation claim.
