Asbestos

Personal Injury

If you have developed an asbestos related industrial disease, you may be entitled to claim compensation.

Due to its durable nature, asbestos was used widely from the early 1900s. It was not until the 1970s that asbestos was discovered to be harmful. As a result, many employees were exposed to asbestos and have since developed industrial diseases.

If you intend to make an asbestos related compensation claim . Legal Advice Helpline can assist you with help and information and can provide you with access to an expert solicitor who will advise you on making a compensation claim for an asbestos related illness.

What are the effects of asbestos?

Bizarrely, asbestos is not generally regarded as harmful unless it is disturbed and becomes inhaled as a dust. Premises where asbestos dust has been allowed to just hang in the air will have been particularly harmful to individuals breathing it in. For employees who regularly breathed in asbestos dust at their workplace, the risk of illness for them was much greater.

When asbestos dust is breathed in, asbestos can settle in the lungs where it damages and scars the lung tissue. It is very difficult to remove asbestos from the lungs and it has been associated with diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.

The effects of asbestos may not become apparent for many years following exposure to the material. Symptoms of asbestos contamination include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Persistent cough
  • Loss of appetite
