The Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) was established in 1946 to provide a way of compensating the victims of negligent uninsured and untraced drivers. Today, each insurer who underwrites motor insurance policies is required by law (Road Traffic Act 1988), to be a member of MIB and to contribute to its funding.

In 2008, there were 170,591 road accidents reported to the police involving personal injury. Many hundreds of traffic accidents occur across our road network in the UK each day and in most cases, it is possible for the victims of personal injury to claim compensation for their injuries from the person responsible for the accident.

However, in cases when a road traffic accident is caused by an uninsured or untraced driver, it can be difficult to claim compensation. In these circumstances, the Motor Insurance Bureau provides compensation to those who have been injured in road traffic accidents by uninsured drivers.
