Whiplash is the term used to describe a neck injury brought about by a sudden and violent movement of the head in opposition to the neck and shoulders. The force of the movement makes the neck move beyond its normal range to such an extent that the ligaments, tendons and muscles in the neck are overstretched (a sprain). This is described as a typical cervical hyper-extension injury. Although the ligament is not broken, a strain can often take a long time to heal. In severe whiplash cases, the pain can last for more than six months before it disappears (late whiplash syndrome).
Compensation for whiplash claim injuries most commonly occur as a result of car accidents or
road traffic accidents, when a collision or sudden deceleration causes an abrupt halt, jolting the head violently forwards, backwards or sideways. Collisions at low velocity may also result in whiplash. Less commonly, whiplash neck sprains can occur with everyday activities such as a jolting of the neck during a
slip, trip or fall.
